Regretwrite is an alternate universe (AU) take on Sonic, who is more widely known as Rewrite.

Rewrite exists in his own canon as both a homage to the classic creepypasta and the wider fandom as a whole. Regretwrite, who may also be called Sonic, Rewrite, or simply Regret, is a reinterpretation of the original character's canon. He could be considered a completely separate entity altogether.

Regret's name comes from a key change in his demeanor - the capacity to feel regret, along with other strong, human-like emotions. While the original character showcases hints of instability and emotion, especially relating to the sentience gained through each ring, this AU serves as his breaking point, where those newfound emotions completely control his actions and physical state rather than his rings.

The change first occurs upon his first interaction with "You", otherwise known as the fourth soul in his collection.

It is unknown why Regret experiences these emotions upon meeting "You." Perhaps it is due to the nature of "Your" soul, or perhaps it can all be attributed to a devastating glitch in his system.

Either way, these newfound emotions are unstable and often difficult for him to interpret.

At some point early in this canon, Regret gains a new ring.

The yellow ring is not something automatically gained. It is not a soul or a promise. It is simply a gift bestowed upon him by "You" - the player who has developed an emotional attachment to him. "You" endured endless suffering at his hands, yet responded with patience and understanding. He didn't understand. It was the first thing he had ever failed to understand.

As soon as "You" fitted him with the new ring, he changed irreversibly.

Following this, Regret slowly begins to sympathize with the captured souls within his domain. He (metaphorically) places them under a microscope, uncovering their past lives and realizing that he feels... remorse. His lust for power begins to fade. Where those lost souls were once viewed solely as fuel, they have become complications in his ever-growing fragility.

Regret has not become stable - not in the slightest. He experiences frequent "nightmares," where events manifest within his reality as though they are truly happening, yet he has no power to stop them. Sometimes they are memories of the torture he inflicted. Sometimes they are much older. Sometimes they feel... brand new.

Despite his instability, he eventually develops a strong desire to release the captive souls. However, doing so could cost him his sentience, as absorbing those souls is what granted him awareness in the first place. He also isn't certain he could undo the damage he has caused, leaving his guilt to grow heavier with each passing moment.

Other Details

This version of Regret is more explicitly ███████ in origin. He believes he is the reincarnation of original sin and █████ himself, retaining many of those memories, although they are foggy.

- He is spiteful toward his idea of "God," whom he believes is both his father and enemy. Regret claims his own divinity in mockery of him.

- Some of his captured souls have suggested that █████ doesn't exist and never has. In this AU, his creator is unknown. Regret would completely reject the idea that his memories are false.

The yellow ring glows whenever he experiences particularly intense emotions. This usually happens when he is talking about or referencing something deeply personal.

- On rare occasions, it rapidly flashes between yellow and red. This happens when his older self is bleeding through the heaviest, often causing him to behave erratically.

Unlike the original Rewrite, his physical states are strictly controlled by emotion rather than by rings. This is why he can appear in many different forms, with his quills raised or lowered in various positions, without ever gaining or losing rings.

- Kyokai only manifests when he is at his most vulnerable.
